Fota – Treasure Hunt and Dog walk in aid of DAWG at Fota House and Gardens

From celebrating and remembering the summer to welcoming a worthy cause, yesterday on Fota Island, a very special family day out and event was held in aid of a worthy cause. Fota house and gardens teamed up with the Cork dog welfare charity DAWG (dog action welfare group) for a special charity event on Sunday 15th September.  The family and dog friendly (of course!) event was held from 12:30-4pm at Fota House and Gardens and featured a special dog walk as well as not one but two treasure hunts around the grand estate and gardens.

Visitors on the day took part in a range of dog and family friendly events within the majestic setting of the 18th century hunting lodge and scenic grounds. For dog lovers there was a dog walk held from 12-4pm. Taking roughly 30-40 minutes to complete, one started at the car park and on through to the gardens and celebrated arboretum taking in the majestic settings of the estate. For children there were treasure hunts through the gardens starting from 2pm to 3pm with prizes supplied by Maxi Zoo (one for age groups 4-8 and another for 8-12).

As well as a day out supporting a worthy cause, admission was free with donations warmly accepted, it gave visitors ample opportunity to take in the many attractions of Fota house and the surrounding area as well as bringing to light the work done by DAWG. Hungry dog walkers and treasure hunters were able to sample the lunch special, homemade cakes and refreshments at Fota House Café which was open all day whilst volunteers from DAWG were on hand to mind dogs throughout the day. The event also offered ample opportunity for visitors to take part in the Fota Houses guided tours encapsulating the house and its’ Victorian Kitchen Gardens whilst on a break from all the action.

With so much on offer for kids, adults and of course dogs and all in aid of a worthy cause all donations made on the day are going to the Cork DAWG new premises in Macroom, yesterdays event was a fun and informative family day out that drew awareness to animal welfare, helping to raise funds all within the beautiful settings of Fota house.
