European Bison helped by Fota

The good folk at Fota Wildlife Park have helped to relocate six European bison ( Europe’s largest land mammal and the European cousin of the American Buffalo ) to the wild in Romania.

The project, which is run in cooperation with wildlife parks in the UK, is part of a wider conservation project to save the Bison from extinction. The 6 animals will join an existing herd, who were introduced into the park from captive herds in Sweden, Germany and Switzerland. Two of the 6 in this conservation move were from Fota Wildlife park.

European bison became extinct in the wild by the early 20th century.
