Fota Island was featured in a recent article by The Irish Post which listed it’s ten favourite islands off the Irish coast. With many of Ireland’s islands already popular tourist destinations in their own right such as the Aran Islands, there are a multitude of wonderful hidden and not-so-hidden gems to be discovered.
Making it into the list at number 3 was Fota Island. The Cork island’s colourful history is now best known for being home to Ireland’s most popular wildlife park. Fota Wildlife Park is home to a host of exotic animals such as giraffes, monkeys and cheetahs and is one of Ireland’s most visited attractions.
Next door to the Wildlife Park is the 5 star Fota Island Hotel and championship golf course which successfully played host to the 2014 Irish Open. Before both of these popular tourist destinations came into being the island was the estate of the Earl of Barrymore with his home in Fota House.
